The Purpose of Previewing
Previewing means looking at a text or book before reading it (TEA, 2002). Previewing is important to do before reading because it helps activate prior knowledge or schema of the reader. Previewing can also help the reader make connections as they read. When previewing, readers look at the title, the author, pictures, and other text features. They notice the text structures of the article or how chapters are organized. Previewing prepared the reader to begin reading. It focuses them in on their task and will help them understand more as they read (TEA, 2002).
