The Purpose of Graphic Organizers
Graphic organizers are defined as, "visual representations that help students organizer ideas from text" (Miller & Veatch, 2011, p.63). Once again, research shows that graphic organizers can aid in comprehension of a text, especially for at-risk students. Graphic organizers support comprehension because they helps readers remember information. They ask for students to sort, categorize, or classify information conceptually. By doing this, "graphic organizers capitalize on the capacities of short-and-long term memory" (Miller & Veatch, 2011, p.63). The best use of these graphic organizers is when they are created to match the structure of the text being studied. Different organizers should be used for different types of texts. They can be used to support comprehension before, during, and after reading and across all content areas (Miller & Veatch, 2011, p. 63).
